Overview

Mud Australia has been carbon neutral since 2020. Their products are handmade in Sydney in a factory covered in solar panels. They award an annual student ceramics prize, donate to charities, and profit-share with their employees....now to add to this they have a range made entirely from recycled material.

Mud came to us on a mission to use their broken ceramics in terrazzo. Founder Shelley Simpson visited our office reminding us of terrazzos Venetian origins in eighteenth century pavements made using marble scraps.  Examining our terrazzo samples Shelley suggested we co-create a range of trivets and from there our first manufacturing collaboration was born.

Mud achieves colour in their porcelain by pigmenting the porcelain body itself, rather than by applying a pigmented glaze. This makes their tableware the perfect terrazzo ingredient as we are able to grind back the surface without grinding through all the colour. Mud supplies us with broken and seconds pieces which our team therapeutically smashes further. From Mud’s extensive and memorable colour pallet, we together narrowed to three colourways - neutral, multicolour and blue.

The pill shaped trivets, designed by Mud are each individually made in three sizes.  We’ve created reusable formwork and pour the trivets in small batches using excess concrete from construction sites. They are hand polished and sealed by our team. Mud then backs each trivet in recycled PET felt and ships each in a recycled PET pouch continuing their commitment to creating a truly zero-waste product.

The range is available via Mud Australia.
