Matso's Eumundi is a 1000m² adaptive reuse hospitality project with architecture, interiors, and furniture designed by Five Mile Radius and Knight Wilson. Hutchinson Builders were the lead contractor. The project commenced design in early 2022 and was completed in late 2023.

Independent brewer and hospitality brand from Broome, Western Australia, Matso's approached Five Mile Radius to design their new Queensland outpost as part of their expansion to the east coast. The site was the heritage-listed 'Joe’s Waterhole,' a timber and tin hotel first erected along Main Road in Eumundi in 1891.

The project brief involved the restoration of the 1920s timber and tin pub, as well as the demolition of various water-damaged additions to make way for a new brewery, restaurant, beer garden, and landscape to the rear of the pub. The new addition consists of four gable-roofed pavilions which echo the proportions of the heritage-listed pub and provide a legible and adaptable 'shed' for future generations.

The use of recycled materials both for construction and furniture was a core design aim. A full survey of salvageable demolition material was undertaken, with many aspects of the new works built from these recycled materials. The Five Mile Radius workshop reworked much of the original pub furniture, resulting in a palette of only recycled and Australian hardwood-based furnishings for the new venue.

The design aims to regenerate the extensive garden to the rear of the site and to connect this garden to the street. Sitting opposite the famous Eumundi markets, the new work needed to fit in with the local context, respect the character of the original pub, and connect activity from the site to the street.
