Sun Stadium

Sun Stadium

Five Mile Radius collaborated with UQ Art Museum, artist Amrita Hepi, poet Jazz Money, Christopher Bassi, and Sibling Architecture to deliver Sun Stadium — a permanent, sustainable public artwork commissioned to mark the inauguration of the UQ Lakes Precinct.

Sun Stadium takes the form of a life-sized sundial, inviting visitors to connect physically and spiritually with place, time, and the sun’s rhythms. Visitors stand at the centre of the dial, aligning their body with the hours and seasons, and engage with the poem that circles the surface.
Five Mile Radius played a key role in the material strategy, prototyping, and fabrication — sourcing sustainable, reclaimed materials and developing modular construction methods to ensure durability, future adaptability, and alignment with deep time and circular economy principles.

Our approach celebrated the layered narratives of solar, circular, local, and deep time, embedding material choices and construction techniques that respected both cultural storytelling and environmental stewardship.

“A testament to the power of interdisciplinary synergies and collaboration, Sun Stadium invites a playful and poetic pause point within a busy university campus. Its innovative use of recycled materials reflects a high standard of craftsmanship and a considered approach to sustainability. Through the collective expertise of its design and construction teams, this project transcends the traditional boundaries of architecture, seamlessly merging technical precision with artistic expression.”
