Northey Street Bathrooms
Five Mile Radius designed a new public bathroom and entry concourse for Northey Street City Farm, Brisbane’s leading urban agriculture community space.
The proposed bathroom sits to the north of the site, creating a clear concourse into the heart of Northey Street City Farm. The positioning of the bathroom ensures it provides amenity to the farm, the market and to Windsor park opposite. This is a highly visible and safe public space, which improves legibility in access to the farm and the nursery.
Wide, clear paths allow for easy access between the nursery, the bathroom and the farm. The increased legibility of this eastern nursery entrance allows for increased exposure to public engagement.
The proposed bathroom is fabricated of recycled steel and crushed masonry construction waste. The aim is to build almost entirely from waste, and to detail, so that each building component can be easily disassembled and reused at the end of its life. This is a case study into designing to suit a circular economy.
“Five Mile Radius challenged us to think differently about what was possible for our site. Their design unlocked the potential of both the place and the materials at hand, creating a civic project that is as thoughtful and sustainable as it is functional. Through their circular approach, they helped us demonstrate that public infrastructure can be low-carbon, adaptable and deeply connected to community. The result is a space that improves access and visibility while reflecting the values of Northey Street City Farm.”
